Sam Hutsby wins Darwin Salver

Sam Hutsby won the Darwin Salver at Rye Golf Club in the South East Youth Championship played on March 18th and 19th . The large silver salver was originally presented to the legendary golfer and writer Bernard Darwin by the Times Newspaper. The prestigious event is open to any player under the age of 21 on 1st January in the year of competition, with a category one handicap . Only 50 players are selected from those with the lowest handicaps. Sam lagged seven strokes behind the leaders at the halfway mark, but with rounds of 69 and 67, he clinched victory by one shot from fellow Hampshire golfer Darren Wright.

2007 AGM

The 2007 AGM was held on November 3rd. Here are some moments from the evening.

The new Captain, George Tremlett, presents the outgoing Captain, Keith Maplesden, with the traditional tie. The Managing Secretary, John Douglass, was coordinating and recording his first AGM, observed by Treasurer Ian Menzies

James Penfold received not one trophy(the Fowley Cup) ... not two (the Bailey Cup) .. but three (the Blois Johnson)

While all members of the victorious Border League team were presented with engraved glass goblets to commemorate Liphook's second win in 30 years. From left to right: Wynn Davies, Bill Wadsworth, Murray Abraham, James Penfold (again!), Paul Stevens. Tom Wade, James Foster, Steve Scorah, Bruce Mellstrom.

The partridge family

Members will remember the photo which appeared in the Magazine section earlier in the year of a mother partridge and five chicks who had made their nest near the clubhouse and who have been much in evidence over the summer.  Regrettably only two chicks and the mother are now seen.

The Club has now acquired a digital camera and the Managing Secretary has taken this close-up of one of the chicks.  She/he shows all the colours of his/her mother but is still much smaller.

Liphook wins Border League

Liphook has now won the Border League.  Only the second time in its 30 year history.  Well done Murray Abraham (the team manager) and his team.

Beyond the call of duty

A special place in the Liphook Golf Club roll of honour must go to Steve Scorah who managed on one day to turn out for the Club to play in the Waterlooville Cup at 1.00pm, then came back to play in an evening Border Cup match, then back to Waterlooville in time for the prize giving - misssing out on supper.

Liphook came second by one point in the Waterlooville Cup, the team comprising Geroge Tremlett, Ryan Mustchin, John Groombridge and David Murdoch. Liphook won the Border League match as well. Tom Wade won 2/1 James Penfold 3/2, Steve Scorah 3/2, Bill Wadsworth 3/2 and Bruce Mellstrom lost 2up.

Accolades for Liphook from Volkswagen Masters

The August edition of Golf Monthly (which ranks Liphook 50th among golf courses in the UK) showers praise on the course where the Regional Finals of the Volkswagen Masters were held . "The setting could not have been better to mark the beginning of the series" it wrote ... "Liphook, one of the outstanding heathland courses in Britain, combines a true test of golf with a real sense of golfing tradition.... Liphook gave an indication of the impressive standard of courses that will hold Regional Finals this year." The photographs below were taken by Golf Monthly who have kindly made them available to us.

"The strength of the field was highlighted by the appearance and eventual victory of Liphook member and England A Squad member Sam Hutsby ." Sam won the event by one stroke and with it a place in the UK Final. Members not familiar with plus handicaps were bemused to hear the announcement of his score "68, net 71" ....

"It was easy to see the entrants were finding the immaculate sloping greens extremely tough and three and even four-putts were a regular occurance. ...." One of the players was quoted: "The course was in absolutely fantastic condition."
