News from the Committee
January 2006
1. Members are reminded to check the procedure for relief under "Winter Rules" which are displayed on the Notice Board.
2. It is recognised that during the recent frosts, it has been impossible to repair pitch marks.
However, now that the ground has thawed, members are requested to renew their efforts to repair all pitch marks they see on our greens.
3. Recently, some members started off from the 1st Tee as a foursome during the 0800-1000 time frame but elected to change to a fourball during their round. This is against the spirit of our agreed rules and is not acceptable.
4. We are well into some of our internal competitions now and already it is noticeable that despite all the encouragement, some matches are not being played by the "due date". It is an equal responsibility to arrange a match before the due date but if this proves impossible, an acceptable result must be agreed by the due date. In future, it is proposed that in cases when a compromise cannot be reached, the winning individual or team will be the one standing on the 1st Tee on the due date at 1300.
5. The submission of cards for handicap is an important part of the Wednesday Mens competitions. However, these competitions traditionally have a cut off time of between 0930 and 1000. If members wish to put cards in from a start time after this and all other rules of the Wednesday Mens competitions are complied with, those cards will be accepted.
There appears to be some confusion regarding priority at the first Tee when a group who started at the tenth approaches. When the group starting from the first and following another group starting from the first, are on the Tee and waiting for the green to clear, they have priority over the group approaching the eighteenth. If the group on the eighteenth have putted out before the next group approach the first, it is the playing through group who have priority. The only exception to this is on Sunday mornings, when between 1000 - 1100, 3 and 4 balls approaching from the 18th Tee have priority.
7. Members are kindly requested not to dump their batteries outside of the kitchen for disposal. Disposal of such items is an individual responsibility and members may take them to the local tips at either Bordon or Petersfield both of which will take old batteries. The Club is charged for the disposal of such items.
8. 2006 Diaries are available in the Foyer of the Clubhouse. November 2005
Re-opening of the B2070 road from Liphook to The Black Fox
Network Rail has carrying out repairs to the railway bridge adjacent to the 15th tee. The road has been closed to traffic since 24th October but the scaffolding is now being removed and it is expected that the road will be reopened on Tuesday November 27th.
AGM - November 5th
The AGM was held at the Club on the evening of November 25th. Here are some of the main items of business covered during the meeeting.
David Petty's period as President has come to an end, and Alan Hensher was elected President.
Roderick More's year of captaincy has finished, and Gordon Musk was elected in his place. Gordon's acceptance speech can be reached by clicking here
Roderick More and John Hutchinson had ended their period of service on the Committee. Anthony Collett and Ian Hewitt were elected to the two vacant places on the Committee. The incoming Captain expressed his wish that the third candidate, James Wardrobe, would put his name forward once more in future years.
Cornelia Kenington had ended her year as Ladies Captain, and Gail Lloyd was elected as the new Captain. Sonia Meredith was elected Vice Captain.
For pictures of the new Committee, click here. Their respective roles on the new Committee will be added when they have been decided.
Roger Morgan and David Petty were elected Honorary Life Members of Liphook Golf Club.
Gordon Musk drew attention to the fact that Barry Morgan's period as Secretary ended this weekend. Ian Walton, the new Secretary, was presentat the meeting, and the Captain asked that the thanks expressed to Barry at the farewell cocktail party on October 29th be recorded in the minutes of the AGM, which wished Barry every good fortune in his new position.
From the October Committee Meeting
Course Policy
The General Committee has agreed a new Course Policy, which establishes the course strategy to which we aspire, as well as such matters as guidelines for course maintenance, course development, health & safety and the use of resources. This important document has been placed in the hall for members to inspect.
Course Footwear
With effect from 1 st November and until 31 st March, golf shoes must be fitted with metal spikes. The reason is that the soft claws collect ice in frosty weather. As a result, they do greater damage to greens and are a safety hazard for the wearer.
Start Time from the 10th
May we remind members that 3 and 4 balls must not start from the 10th before 0815 in order that they do not arrive at the 1st before 1000 and cause unnecessary congestion.
Start Sheets
A member recently wrote his name next to that of another member on a monthly (Stableford) start sheet. When he arrived at the tee for the competition, he discovered that his playing partner had arranged to play with someone different without telling him. Members are therefore reminded that they may not alter their playing arrangements after having entered their name on a start sheet without first agreeing this with that member. This also applies, if a member is unable to play through ill health or similar reason.
Message from the outgoing Captain
The Club AGM will be held on Saturday 5th November, at which point the Captain, Roderick More, will stand down. We invited Roderick to reflect on his year in the hot seat. Here is what he wrote:
It got off to a bad start. We moved house two weeks before I took over (our fault) and my wife, Jo, had a heart attack a month afterwards (not our fault). Happily things definitely improved, as 2005 got under way.
I think all Captains start their year with slight feelings of trepidation and I was no different. In the event, it has been full of pleasures and some sense of achievement; much of that due to the fact that I have been blessed with an able and united Committee and the help of many members. That makes an enormous difference.
We have built a fine new kitchen but, just as important, we have got to grips with balancing the wish of members to have food and drink at off-peak times with the natural desire that we do not waste money on catering overstaffing.
We have made a significant step forward in ring-fencing entrance fees which means that we can invest in the future of the club and do not fritter away our savings on cutting the grass and painting the buildings. We have had a major success in attracting new members who feel comfortable at Liphook and with whom we feel comfortable.
We have had wonderful weather; mainly warm and sunny but with sufficient rain (usually when we didn't want to play golf) to produce better fairways than for many a year. And, as always, the greens have been fast and true.
All good things have to come to an end and whilst we will miss Barry's devotion to Liphook and his unique knowledge of the Club, we have found a talented replacement in Ian Walton.
The above all fall into the category of administration and are not to be dismissed for that reason. But what really matters is that our members are contented and there aren't many who have told me they are not. On the contrary, the feeling I get is that the club is confident and at ease. This is the best that any Captain can hope for.
Roderick More
At the AGM there were three candidates for membership of the Committee. Profiles of the two elected members can be found under Committee News. The third candidate was James Wardrobe, whose photograph and CV were published prior to the election.
James Wardrobe

James has lived in Liphook since 1972 and has been a member of Liphook Golf Club for more than twenty years. He is a graduate in Classics from Pembroke College, Oxford, and has recently retired after a long career in educational management in the independent sector. Having worked throughout his career with young people, James is looking forward to utilising his experience and skills in running, together with John Jeffrey, the Juniors section of the Club from 2006. James is putting his name forward for the Committee in the willing belief that there is a growing need, as the world in which golf clubs operate becomes more complex, for committee members to bring a high level of professional expertise and dedication to the job.
James was Housemaster and Senior Administrator of Highfield School, Liphook, in the 1970s and is now a Director both of Highfield and its pre-prep school, Brookham. Subsequently he was Principal of Lansdowne Independent Sixth Form College in London and Deputy Director of Lansdowne Group Operations, with particular responsibility for staff training and new course development. From 1990 until his retirement James has been Headmaster of the Hellenic College of London, a co-educational day school in Knightsbridge with a bi-lingual and bi-cultural curriculum in English and Modern Greek. His fluency in Modern Greek is however of little value on Liphook golf course, where his current handicap is an enthusiastic and hopefully now reducing 22. He is an Honorary Life Member of the Round Square organisation of international schools, and of the Conference for Independent Further Education. He is a Life Associate Member of the Independent Schools Association and a trained inspector of the Independent Schools Inspectorate. He is currently the Secretary of the Reform Club Golfing Society.
James has recently returned from a non-stop five-kilometre swim of the Hellespont (Dardanelles) from Asia to Europe, raising over £3500 for charity. In addition to swimming, his other interests include classical archaeology, history of art, drama, literature and music. Publications include “Injuns”, a Musical Western version of “The Tempest”, for which he wrote the lyrics and book. His wife, Pauline, having retired this summer, hopes now to resume her golfing career at Liphook, where she is a long-time, but recently inactive, member.
Liphook's next Secretary
'
Ian Walton with the Captain. Roderick writes ...
I am pleased to announce that the Club has appointed Mr Ian Walton to the position of Secretary of Liphook Golf Club. Ian is aged 45 and is currently the General Manager of Lee-on-the-Solent Golf Club. Before moving to golf club management early last year Ian enjoyed a successful 25 years with Barclays Bank working in the UK., Kenya and New York. He is a 5 handicap golfer.
Profile of Ian Walton
Barry Morgan
Members are reminded that time is running out for those wishing to express their thanks to Barry Morgan for his contribution to Liphook Golf Club over the last sixteen years by making a contribution to a leaving present.
There are envelopes in the bar. So don’t delay, do it today! You may make a donation in one of two ways:
- send a cheque (made payable to Liphook Golf Club) to the Assistant Secretary, or
- place a donation in one of the envelopes that are available on the bar and hand it to a member of the bar staff.
Don’t delay, do it today!
Closure of the B2070 road from Liphook to The Black Fox
Network Rail have advised the Club that they intend to carry out repairs to the railway bridge adjacent to the 15 th tee and that the road will be closed to traffic from 24 th October for up to 6 weeks. Access under the bridge will be maintained for both pedestrians and buggies. Members who approach the Club from the north are advised to reconnoitre alternative routes to the club; there will be no access via the 10 th tee car park.
Drainage of the 5th, 15th and 16th greens
Work has started on installing new drainage systems under these greens and should be completed by 7 th October. Temporary greens will be in operation at each location for a period of some two weeks while the drains are being laid and the turf replaced. New Address Book and 2006 Diary The new address book will be published during October and the 2006 Diary will be issued before the end of the year.
Dress Code
Members are reminded that men’s shorts must be tailored and cut no more than two inches above the knee and worn with either socks that fold from the knee or with calf length short socks which must be predominantly white in colour. So-called leisure or fashion shorts, including cargo shorts are not acceptable either on the course or in the clubhouse. This code applies to members, their guests and visitors.
July 2005
New Secretary
Prime Appointments, the specialist recruitment company that has been engaged to assist in the recruitment of the new Secretary, will begin to interview suitable candidates at the club in early August.
2. Leaving Party
The Committee wishes to invite members to a farewell drinks party to be held for Barry Morgan on the evening of Saturday 29th October. More details will be announced nearer the time.
3. New Till
Some members will have noticed that a new till has been installed behind the bar. Orders for food will now be transmitted directly to the kitchen along with the member’s name if the purchase is made using the Club Card. As a result the Bar staff will be available full-time to provide service. We trust members will be patient in the event of any teething problems.
4. Website
Club Newshas been relatively inactive during the last two months, during which time a large number of improvements have been made. The revised site is now active and members are encouraged to visit www.liphookgolfclub.com.
5. Trafalgar Day – Sunday 23 October
To celebrate the bicentenary of Vice Admiral Nelson's famous victory in the Battle of Trafalgar on the 21st October 1805, there will be a match on the morning of Sunday 23 rd October, followed by an appropriate lunch. The format will depend on the number of those who wish to play. There being a considerable naval contingent in the membership, it is hoped that a large number might allow a shotgun (cannon) start for a suitably powerful engagement! |
June 2005
1. New Secretary. The Committee has agreed the formation of a small selection panel comprising the Captain, the Vice-Captain, Keith Maplesden and Ian Hewitt to manage the process of selecting and appointing the new Secretary. Keith is a former Golf Club Secretary and currently Secretary of the Hampshire, Isle ofWight & Channel Islands Golf Union and Ian has crucial recent professional experience in the interviewing and selection of senior personnel. The panel has started work and a specialist recruitment company, Prime Appointments, has been engaged to assist them in their important task .
2. Twilight Green Fee. With immediate effect, this arrangement for LGC members’guests will be extended to 7 days a week and will now commence at 5.00 pm. The green free will be £10 per guest and members expecting to start play after 6.00 pm, when the Pro shop is closed, should pay at the Bar.
3. Pitch Marks. In the near future notices will appear on certain tees alerting Members to the number of un-repaired pitch marks found on the green of that hole at the end of the previous day. A few seconds spent on repairing pitch marks when first arriving on the green helps avoid permanent damage and shows respect for others.
4. English Girls Championship –25/30 July. The Course will be closed until 15.00 on Friday 29th and 11.00am on Saturday 30th. Notices requesting volunteers to act as ball-spotters and car park marshals will shortly be posted in the men and ladies changing rooms. Please try to make two or three hours available to the organisers so helping to spread the burden around the membership.
5. Short Socks. The Committee has reviewed the earlier ruling and decided that short socks worn with shorts must be calf-length and predominately white . Members are reminded that shorts must be tailored (i.e. not elastic waisted) and should be of a length suitable for playing golf at LGC rather than for the tennis court or the beach. .
6. Clubhouse Opening Times. Members are reminded that during the Summer months the Clubhouse closes at 7pm Sunday - Tuesday and at 8pm Wednesday - Saturday and that they should not leave anything in the Clubhouse that they may require if their round of golf is likely to finish after the Clubhouse has closed.
7. Format of Play - Competition Days. Members are reminded that on Competition days, normally Tuesday and Saturday, that the 1 st tee is the only start point, unless otherwise specified, and that play in the “gap”on the start sheet is limited to 2-Ball and Foursomes only. No 3 or 4-Ball golf maybe be played until the last of the start sheet times has passed, 1430 on a Tuesday and 1500 on a Saturday.
May 2005
1. Nominations. The Committee has approved the nominations of Capt Alan Hensher as President and Mr Keith Maplesden as Vice-Captain; both nominations to be submitted to the AGM on 5 th November 2005 for approval.
2. Captain’s Day. The list for Captain’s Day is now on the board and the Captain hopes that he will be able to welcome many members on 2nd July. This has traditionally been an important day for raising money for the Captain’s charity which, this year, is the RNLI. The Captain would therefore appreciate it if as many members as possible would contribute raffle prizes so that we can give the maximum support to this wonderful charity. Please hand in anything you can donate to Phil or anyone else behind the bar.
3. Juniors. We will be looking for volunteers to play with the Juniors in their Stablefords on 2nd June and during July and August. About 20 members regularly give us their support and we are most grateful to them. We now hope that some of the remaining 550 members will put their names down to play with a Junior. Without this the Juniors cannot put what they learn on the practice ground into action and improve their handicaps. So, please consider giving up one or two of your Roll Up appearances and support the Junior Section this summer. It is very rewarding. The June list is on the board in the Hall and the Summer Volunteer list will be on the Social Board near the end of June.
4. Border League. Bill Wadsworth is having considerable difficulty in raising teams for our Border League matches and it would be a great loss if this resulted in Liphook having to withdraw from the league, particularly as the competition was conceived by a Liphook member. We therefore ask all our lower handicap members to give Bill the best support that they can. . The list for all the matches is on the notice board so please take a look at it and put your name down if at all possible. Bill deserves the support of all of us.
5. Assistant Pro. Ian Mowbray has appointed a new Assistant Pro Mark MacRae will join us from the Scott Cranfield Golf Academy in Essex by the beginning of June. Please give him a warm Liphook welcome.
6. Insurance. Members are reminded of the importance of being adequately insured for loss of clubs and such things as a hole in one. The Secretary has details of such insurances.
7. Twilight Green Fees. With immediate effect it has been decided to introduce a Twilight Green Fee for Members’ Guests. From 1730 on a Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays, Members may sign in 3 guests at a cost of £10.50 (half the normal price) per guest.
December 2004
Pitchmarks: The Committee is very concerned at
the number of unrepaired pitch marks to be found on the Greens.
Members are once again asked to take extra care to repair their
own Pitchmarks.
Membership. The Committee is anxious to encourage
members to bring forward new applicants for full membership of
the Club. To do so, the following scheme will operate for three
months from 1st February to 30th April 2005.
a. A member proposing an applicant during the three month period,
who is accepted for full membership before the end of 2005, will
receive a credit of £100 on their Bar Card when the new member
pays their Entry Fee. If such an existing member does not already
hold a Bar Card, he or she will receive one with the £100
credited.
b. A member may bring a potential applicant to the Club as a
guest for one round of golf at any time for a green-fee of £5.
Members will recall that the Captain expressed concern at the
AGM about the shortfall in membership. The Club has vacancies for
26 full members, there are only 23 qualified applicants and 24
further members are likely to give up full membership at the beginning
of July.
The Committee is confident that members will work hard to introduce
suitable applicants to the Club but hopes that this scheme will
give some added impetus at a time when action is vital.
Membership Applications : The General Committee
feel that the Membership Application procedure takes too long and
determined that the number of supporters should be reduced from
6 to 2 who have played with the applicant at Liphook. This change
is effective immediately and has been applied to all current applications.
Kitchen. The Kitchen closes for refurbishment
on 3 January 2005 . During the closure members will be able to
get soup, sandwiches, rolls, tea, coffee and hot chocolate from
the Bar. As we will not have any dishwashing facilities we will
be using paper plates and cups. Following the refurbishment it
is planned to hold a social event during which members will be
able to look around the refurbished kitchen.
Bank Holiday Mondays. Following a number of
requests it has been agreed that in 2005 the normal Bank Holiday
Foursomes will be replaced by other competitions, to include a
Medal, a Stableford and a 2 man Texas Scramble, all of which will
continue to be open to all members and their guests.
Trafalgar Day. The club is looking at ways of
celebrating the 200th anniversary. It is likely that we will combine
the Gentleman’s Dinner with a Trafalgar Day Dinner and a
suitable golfing event the following day. Further details will
be published nearer to the time.
Keith Maplesden. Congratulations go to Keith
Maplesden who has been elected a Vice-President of the Hampshire,
Isle of Wight and Channel Islands Golf Union.
Club Diary. It is hoped that the 2005 Diary
will be available for collection by Thursday 5 January 2005 at
the latest.
Club Address Book. The latest version is now
ready for collection in the Clubhouse.
November 2004
1. Golf Shoes : From the 1st November
members are requested not to use soft studs on their golf shoes.
Past experience has shown that in wet and/or icy conditions soft
studs do not give sufficient grip to prevent slipping and accidents.
Also, when frost/ice accumulates on the soft studs damage to
the greens can occur.
In addition, our professional warns that excessive wear of metal
spikes on our shoes results in great difficulty in their removal.
Attempts to replace such worn studs can result in breakage of the
thread inside the shoe sole. Members are recommended to avoid such
problems by timely replacement of all studs.
2. "Golf Monthly" and "Golf World":
Rankings of the best courses in Britain appeared in recent editions
of these golf magazines. In "Golf Monthly" Liphook Golf
Club was ranked 50th and in "Golf World" the Club was
ranked 104th . Both magazines have the same publisher, and the
judgement criteria and panellists were exactly the same in each
case. Your committee is convinced that "Golf Monthly" got
it right! (see Golf
Monthly and Golf
World)
3. Final of the County Sevens : Our team lost
to Hayling in the semi-finals, but we congratulate the whole team
for doing so well in this competition.
4. Hampshire Under-18 Girls' Competition : In
last months NFTC we told you that Tracey Willmont had won through
to the Final of the Hampshire Under 18 Girls KO Final. Although
giving her all Tracey lost 3/2 to Katie Thomson from Corhampton.
5. Winter Golf . Winter is nearly upon us and
Members are asked to help to keep the Greens in as good as condition
as possible. Ways in which this can be done, when playing friendly
golf, include:
- Trolleys. Only use a trolley if it is a medical necessity.
Reduce the number of clubs you play with and carry a pencil bag.
- Putting Out. To preserve the areas around the holes, don't
hold the pin for long putts and consider conceding short putts.
This is especially necessary during a prolonged frost period
when the ground is too hard for a new hole to be cut.
6. Insurance. Members are reminded that the Club's
Insurers no longer pay out on hole in one or refund subscriptions
because of illness. It is possible for individuals to get cover
for hole in one and for subscription refund due to a golf related
injury. The Secretary has details of such schemes.
News from the Committee - October 2004
1. The Gershwin Years : On 12th November
a black tie dinner followed by musical entertainment from the Gershwin
era will be held at the Club. The singer will be Tony Jacobs who
toured with the Sid Lawrence Orchestra for nine years before going
solo. He will be accompanied on the keyboard by Jim Barry. The
evening will include works by George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin,
Rogers and Hart, and songs made famous by Sinatra, Crosby and others.
The maximum number that can be accommodated at this event is 78
(members only), i.e. 13 tables of six diners. In order to ensure
fairness of allocation of tables, when the list is posted on 7th
October please do not put your name down unless you are
able to include the names of all six people in your party.
2. We congratulate ......
- Pauline Provest, Anne Robertson, Jenny Rowe and Sue Smart
on winning the Corhampton Centenary Shield in competition with
44 other clubs.
- Tracey Willmont on reaching the final of the Hampshire Under
18 Girls Competition to be played at Waterlooville. We wish her
success.
3. Final of the County 7's : Liphook has reached
the final stages of the Hampshire County 7's to be played at Royal
Winchester on Saturday, 9 th October. Opponents in the semi-final
in the morning will be Hayling. Our team will play again in the
afternoon either in the final (without doubt) or the 3 rd /4 th
place match. We hope that plenty of Liphook members will make the
journey to support "our lads". Full information is on display in
the Entrance Hall.
4. Sunday, 10th October : members should not
be surprised or alarmed to see 200 people walking on the public
rights of way from the Links Hotel up to the road to Forestmere
on this date. They will be taking part in an event sponsored by
the WWF.
News from the Committee September 2004
1. Important Diary Date : There will be a very
special party at the Club at lunchtime on Sunday, 17 th October
to launch our 80th anniversary book "The Liphook Story". Make sure
you get your name on the list when it goes up on the board.
2. Club Competitions : The Committee has agreed
the following changes:
- Captains Cup, Blois-Johnson Cup, Fowley Cup - the number of
competitors qualifying for the Match Play stage will be reduced
from 8 to 4 from 2005.
- Club Scratch Match Play Championship - A separate competition
will be held next year which will be open to all who wish to
play.
- Wednesday Men - The actual 'Wednesday Men' competition is
for those playing between 0800 and 1000. Those wishing to play
after 1000 may do so and have their card counted for handicap
purposes, however they will not be taken as playing in the 'Wednesday
Men' competition.
- Elders Format - It has been agreed that the number of 4BBB
matches maybe increased on condition that the 1 st tee is occupied
for no longer than 1 hour.
- Card Rule - From 2005 it will be a requirement for those entering
any 'Board' or 'Board' qualifying competition to have played
in at least 2 qualifying competitions in the previous 12 months.
- Annual Handicap Review - This will be carried out in January/February
for both Ladies' and Men.
3. Sky TV : Since March 2003 we have been
subscribing to Sky TV on a trial basis. The use of this facility
has not been great enough to justify the significant rental cost
and we are therefore discontinuing our subscription at the end
of September - after the Ryder Cup.
4. County 7's : The Club is playing Brokenhurst
in the semi-final of the County 7's at Liphook on Sunday 5 th September
at 1200. The winners will go through to the Finals at Royal Winchester
on 7th October. Ryan Mustchin and his team hope that as many Members
as possible will turn out and support them.
5. Stoneham Cup: The Ladies play Alresford at
1030 on Friday 3rd September at Hockley GC in the Quarter Finals
of the Stoneham Cup. Ann Foster and her team would welcome any
support members can give.
6. Tee Pegs : To avoid confusion with the
White Discs and White Pegs it has been agreed that wef 1 September
the White Discs will be removed and be replaced by White Posts
which will be for competition play only. Yellow Pegs will be for
Society and Green Fee players. Blue Pegs will be introduced and
will be placed between the Yellow and White Pegs and are for Members
everyday use, Elders and Club Friendly Matches if they so wish.
News from the Committee - Aug 2004
1. PSI System : This is now installed in the
Pro's Shop and members should use the simple touch screen system
to enter the competition and when finished to enter their own competition
scores. The introduction of PSI will eventually allow Members to
book their start times either in the shop or directly from the
internet.
2. New Members : The start of the new financial
year is always a time when we get some departures from the Club. We
therefore ask everyone to redouble their efforts to recruit new
members. This is so much the best way to ensure that
the special character of Liphook is maintained, so please miss
no opportunity to introduce your friends to the pleasures of golf
at Liphook.
3. Bar/Catering : We are well into the holiday
period and it is inevitable that there will be times when we are
short of staff in the kitchen. We ask members for their understanding.
Despite this, there may be times when you may wish to comment on
our bar and kitchen service or even complain. In this case we ask
that you talk to the Secretary or, in his absence, Anthony Provest
who is Chairman of the relevant Sub Committee. Please do
not address complaints to the bar or kitchen staff.
4. Club Website :
We would like to remind you that the website address is www.liphookgolfclub.com.
The Open section is mainly for visitors. The Members section is
available only to members and is regularly updated with information
and magazine articles. You will find that it is in your interest
to visit it at least once a week. When you enter the Members section,
you are asked for a User Name (type: LGCMember)
and a Password (type: Wheatsheaf ) - you must
be precise with upper and lower case. If you have any difficulty
in reaching the site, please contact the Secretary.
5. Well played, Liphook : Our representative
golfers have hit a purple patch...
County Sevens - our team has reached the Group
Final where they will play Brokenhurst Manor at Liphook.
Hillyard Trophy, West Sussex - Won by Bob Locking,
Duncan Fleming and Bill Wadsworth. Bob Locking won the Individual
Prize.
Seniors Trophy , West Hill -
Won by Duncan Fleming, John Hagenbuch, Nigel Lovett-Turner and
Chris Rowe. John Hagenbuch won the Individual Prize.
Dads Army Invitation - Worplesdon - Won by Bill
Wadsworth, Mike See and David Moffat. Bill Wadsworth won the Individual
Prize.
Stoneham Cup - Having finished all their Group
matches the Ladies await deliberations on matches won and count
backs to see if they progress to the next round.
6. Notification of Course Closures : Members
will be aware that there a number of occasions throughout the year
when the Course is Closed. The days on which this happens are normally
notified in the Club Fixture List as well as being published on
the Monthly Sheet. There have been a number of incidents lately
of Members turning up to play not having checked to see if the
Course is open and then starting in the middle of an event when
they think the Tee is free. This has lead to complaints from the
organisers of events, as a result Members are asked to check what
Tee reservations apply on the day and are not to start before the
given time. This also applies to those members who wish to play
before 0800. Course Closed until 1200 means no play by members
before 1200.
News from the Committee - June 2004
1. Preferred Lies
Preferred lies may be taken on all closely mown areas until further
notice.
2. Player Score Input
The Committee has agreed that the Player Score Input (PSI) should
be installed. This will enable members to enter their competition
scores using a simple touch-screen monitor that will be placed
in either the pro shop or the entrance hall. More details will
be made available to members when we get closer to acquiring the
hardware.
3. Congratulations
The Club has had a remarkable run of success on the golf course
and we say very well done to the following:
- The Captain, the Secretary, the Head Greenkeeper and the Club
Professional who represented the Club in the John Deere Team
Invitational at Petersfield. They now go to Forest Pines in Lincolnshire
in August for the UK Finals from which the winners will then
go to USA to represent the UK in the John Deere World Team Championships.
Mike Friend also won the nearest the pin competition.
- David Murdoch and James Chapman who at the Hampshire County
Championships, which were played at North Hants GC, for winning
the Slater Cup and the Hunt Salver which go to the winners of
the Saturday Morning Foursomes.
- Joyce Edwards, Jean Groombridge, Jillian Howarth, Jackie Millar
and Marsha Musk on winning the inaugural Hayling Trophy, an inter
