The Junior Section is thriving – so much so that there is a waiting list for membership. Parents and grandparents, to say nothing of potential Juniors, are puzzled by the process of selection, so we asked the Co-ordinator, John Jeffrey, to cast some light.
Applying to join
You do not have to be eight years old to be placed on the waiting list, as some people think. At birth is best! You do however have to be eight or older on July 1st in a given year to become a junior member.
There are at present 18 waiting to become junior members, aged between seven and fifteen. That takes into account Juniors who will transfer to full membership this year. On July 1st 2007, twelve more juniors will make the move, and their places will become vacant. So I am afraid we won't be able to accommodate everyone on the list.
You can get an entry form from the Secretary’s office; when you have filled it in, send it to me, John Jeffrey, as Coordinator, and you will be placed on the waiting list – contact me at liphookjuniors@hotmail.co.uk.
Free coaching
Some on the waiting list (generally related to full members, or with mates who are already junior members) have asked if they can join in the free coaching which Ian Mowbray and Mark Macrae provide before the weekly Stableford competitions in the Spring and Summer. The answer is, I am afraid, ‘no’ for a number of reasons including insurance.
However, Ian has recently agreed that his assistant, James Warrington, will give lessons to the ‘waiting list’ as a group on dates to be agreed in the Spring and Summer. James can also asses the level of your golfing ability and potential and complete part TWO of your application form to save time later. Because they are not technically members of Liphook a nominal fee, probably as low as £2, will have to be charged for legal reasons but I am sure this will not be too much to bear. If you are on the waiting list, contact James to arrange the details and as more join the list they too will be informed of the arrangements.
