The Liphook Ladies Section was formed in the 1920s and we now have around 140 members. The Course for the Ladies has a standard scratch score of 73. It is considered an extremely good test of golf; a Course that rewards good shots and seriously punishes the bad. It is classified as a Championship Course for Ladies and hosted the English Girls Championships in July 2005. |

Spring MeetingThe Spring Meeting was played in uncertain weather this year, passably pleasant for the first day's medal round, wet and windy for the second day the foursomes. After an excellent lunch, Diana, with Sarah's assistance, presented the prizes. .jpg) Veronica Hargreaves scored an 84 gross to win the Gale Cup for the best scratch score. .jpg) Mary Boyle won the Blois Johnson Trophy with the best nett score of 70 Diana Benham and Sarah Locking won the Stableford Foursomes with 37 points, no mean achievement in the rain. Finally, Diana presented Mary Moffat with the Louise Bennett Trophy for winning the american tournament which was played over the winter months.

March Mixed FoursomesThe weather for the March Mixed Greensome Foursomes was cold with a chilly wind, but there was no rain. There were two starting points with a slight delay at the first when matches came round from the fifteenth rather sooner than expected, but things eventually sorted themselves out. .jpg) In the testing conditions, the winners, Bryan Smith and Diana Jeffrey did well to score 40 points. Diana and Bryan with the organisers, Barbara and Ian Young. Runners-up in second place, Nigel Lovett-Turner and Shirley Julien, with 39 points. 3rd - Dennis Freedman and Vee Green, 4th - Eric Julien and Gentian Walls, 5th - Andy Robertson and Diana Kingdon, 6th - Roger Knight and Catriona Tremlett, 7th John Kingdon and Frances Carver and, finally, 8th - Johnny Talbot and Mary Moffat. |

Charity Bridge DayThe Bridge Drive, in aid of the Rainbow Trust Children's Charity, was a huge success. The organisers - Elizabeth Morison and Diana Benham with roving reporter, Caroline Scallon. There was a lot of work beghind the scenes as 26 tables were set up, with Phil's help. A whole new meaning to the phrase 'two up and two down'... "...leave that to me, Guv..." Jillian at the raffle table..."Where can I slip that in?" Perfect! In great part due to the selling skills of Jillian Howarth, Jo Talbot and Sheena Cowling, £1440 was made from the raffle. All the prizes were most generously donated. ...a real bargain - nobody escaped. Every one a winner! Diana welcomed every one as they arrived and settled down at their tables. "...if I had only finessed that king..." Brenda Halsey organised the tea, which was described as 'the best ever!' Brenda's bunnies... ...at your service. Club Captain, George Tremlett, presented the prizes. And the grand total was...£2396. Fantastic! It was a long day, but worth the effort, as the whole team collapsed onto chairs at 5.10 pm, with large drinks as the Bohunt Boys, supervised by Phil the indefatigable, carried all the tables back into the lounge. Many thanks to every person who contributed time and money towards the very worthwhile Rainbow Trust Children's Charity.

Triple Success! The Triple Trophy is played annually over the winter months, a fierce (but friendly!) contest between Liphook, Blackmoor and Petersfield. The format is a St Andrews Greensomes Stableford and four pairs of players represent each club, playing at the three courses in turn. The scores are accumulated and this year Liphook made a flying start to the season by coming out on top with 281 points, over Blackmoor's 276 and Petersfield's 255 points. Team Captain, Carole Cregeen, is shown holding the trophy, with seven of the sixteen members who competed in the various 'legs' and whose sterling efforts helped secure the win - hopefully the first of many such successes for the coming year. |

February News Round-upBelated commiserations to Ann Foster, who fell at the side of the 8th green a couple of weeks ago and broke her arm just below her right shoulder - extremely painful, as it can't be plastered. She says she is feeling a little more comfortable now, but it sounds as if it is going to be a long haul back to good health. Get well soon, Ann. Congratulations to Anne Downing who scored 41 points in the last stableford of January. Very good score, keep up the good work. A reminder about the bookshelf for paperbacks in the Ladies' room. Some of the dross has been cleared away and new books added, so hopefully it has a new lease of life. Do keep bringing in any books you've enjoyed and borrow others. Donations to the Rainbow Trust may be placed in the blue box on top of the bookshelf, a very worthy cause. News of Liphook Ladies has reached across the Atlantic Ocean to Augusta Country Club in Georgia. A lady member read about our birdie tree on the website and emailed the Club Secretary for more information about the mechanics of copying it for her golf club. How delightful to think that golfers so far away are interested in the way we do things here. It will be good to hear how they get on... The Rest of the World beat England today, 12th February. So, socks to the winners! |

Temporary Members| The ladies' temporary membership scheme will be undergoing a change, reflecting the success and popularity this scheme has generated. Sadly, the club cannot have unlimited numbers of temporary members and so an upper limit of ten will be introduced with immediate effect. On gaining a handicap, those who are already temporary members will be eligible to join Liphook Golf Club under the normal Full Membership procedure. If there are vacancies, they will be offered membership; however, if the ladies section is full, they will be placed on a waiting list which will be reviewed regularly and when appropriate, full membership will be offered. Whilst on the waiting list, temporary members will pay the same subscription as at present but, having gained a recognised handicap, the restrictions on the time they play will be lifted. Regrettably, they will not be eligible to play in any official Club competitions until becoming a full member. If temporary members have not gained a handicap within eighteen months, under normal circumstances, the membership will cease and another application may not be made for a further twelve months. This obviously permits other ladies the opportunity of joining this very popular scheme. |

December News Round-upCommiserations to Carole Sentance, who has broken her ankle. She slipped and fell on the path leading from the 4th when it was icy last week. There is no such thing as a good time to have such an accident but, certainly, the Christmas Season must be the worst. Get well soon, Carole. As the results of the 12 hole competition of 18th December will not appear on www.howdidido.com, I will put them here. Division 1 1. Anne Lloyd - 22 pts 2. Anna Large - 21 pts 3. Jo Talbot - 20 pts Division 2 1. Val Knight - 23 pts 2. Sarah Locking - 20 pts 3. Pat Randall - 19 pts Division 3 1. Beth Perring-Evans - 27 pts 2. Betty Bussell - 18 pts 3. Sheila Fairley - 14 pts For those of you interested in the discussion afterwards about who has the honour after play of a hole in a stableford, the actual wording of Rule 32-1 is "In handicap bogey, par and Stableford competitions, the competitor with the lowest net score at a hole takes the honour at the next teeing ground".

Festive FoursomesThe Festive Foursomes is the last big event of the year for the Ladies' Section. The customary shotgun start was arranged, sometimes difficult if the weather in inclement, as it is impossible to shorten the competition to twelve holes due to the varied starting points. However, Diana worked her magic and there was only a persistent drizzle to contend with instead of the heavy rain forecast. .jpg) The shotgun start enabled the whole field to sit down for lunch together The tables were decorated imaginatively and soon there was a hubbub of conversation and laughter, added to by the rocket balloons and party poppers, as Christmas lunch with wine was enjoyed by all. Prizegiving followed, with a massive twenty-five prizes. The top three winning pairs First - Carole Sentance and Felicity Gibson, second - Gill Mobsby and Anne Downing and third - Jeni Rowe and Frances Carver. All had 34 points, the positions decided on countback. A most satisfactory and enjoyable day. It remains to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. |
