Swing
Why not make a fresh start and get your game in shape by visiting Ian Mowbray’s golf academy @ liphook golf club.
Ian and senior assistant Mark Macrae are both fully PGA qualified and have gained a wealth of experience in coaching players of all standards.
Their belief is that all golfing skills can be learned and strive to help their pupils reach their own potential to gain greater enjoyment from playing golf.
Initially the pupil receives a free 15 minute assessment before a personalised improvement plan is developed and agreed upon.
Technology is now playing an even greater role in golf swing improvement and at Ian’s indoor academy your swing can be analysed on the gasp video system and achiever launch monitor, highlighting both your strong and weak points.
If being able to see your swing helps, then feeling the correct swing is invaluable. This is achieved through the explanar swing trainer, which allows the pupil to experience their optimum biomechanical swing helping to create muscle memory. This system is described by Butch Harmon as the best he’s ever seen, and uses it every day at his own golf school.
How good are you from 50 yards?
If you regularly take more than 3 strokes from within 50 yards, then you are wasting valuable shots and costing yourself dearly!
Only a minority of members come along for short game lessons - putting, bunkers, chipping & pitching - and this continually surprises me. Everyone wants a cure for their slice or to hit the ball further but fails to realise that by improving their short game they will reduce their scores and may even also start to improve their long game as the two are linked. People will often have the same fault with their swing be it a long or short shot.
According to the EGU 55% of shots are made from within 50 yards of the hole! Of which putting accounts for 43%. Therefore at least 55% of your practice time should be focused on this section of the game. We are lucky here at Liphook in that we have better short game practice facilities than a lot of other clubs.
Familiar problems that I hear and see are: -
1) Poor distance control
2) Thinning/fatting wedges
3) Lack of control over the trajectory of wedges
4) Lack of confidence and understanding
They are all usually the result of the following mistakes at set-up: -
• Incorrect aim – usually to the right
• Incorrect grip – usually strong, which causes the face to close
• Poor posture
• Lack of lower stability
• Using excessive hand action as a result of little body action
The good news is that rapid improvement can be made with a basic understanding and decent fundamentals. I firmly believe that practising the short game will improve your game as a whole and result in lower scores.
The correct equipment does help. It’s especially important that your putter is the correct length for you (most are too long) as well as the lie angle. Lie angle is very important in the wedges, as is the angle of bounce and loft. We will be glad to give you free advice as to whether your equipment is suitable for you
Mark, James or I would love to help you improve your short game, be it a session concentrating on a single component such as putting, or a course which will allow other areas to be addressed also.

Does your driver conform?
Do you know that, as from 1st January 08, your driver may become illegal? Its Coefficient of Restitution (COR) may be too high, technical-speak for the ball jumping off the face too quickly because the trampoline effect gives you an unfair advantage. Above .830 is illegal.
For professional and top amateur events, such clubs have been illegal for over 2 years now, but now the regulation applies to ordinary club golfers.
How will you know if your driver is non-conforming?
• There is a good chance that it will be, if you purchased it between 2001 and late 2005.
• If it is marked with a ‘ +, Hi-Cor’…. or you hit it miles!
To establish the legality of your driver simply check out the make and model at www.randa.org or ask in the shop.
Driver technology has moved on so much in the past six months that a new model will probably go at least as far and an awful lot straighter. We have a full range of demo models in a variety of lofts and shaft flexes to suit all swings. We would be glad to offer a free of charge custom fit and impartial advice at no extra charge. Remember to also consider the savings that you will make with your Loyalty Card and our Club Partnership Programme.
Please bear this in mind when you’re looking on the internet and don’t buy from suppliers who don’t offer this service. We also only sell the genuine article – no fakes.
Good golfing

Club personalisation
Naturally this same swing knowledge and technology can help to identify the correct clubs for a golfer. As every golf swing is different, it’s only natural that clubs should be personalised to that unique swing.
When purchasing clubs, key factors such as swing speed, launch angle, grip thickness, lie angle and length all need to be considered. Quality clubs can be tried and compared to find the one that works best and at no extra cost when a purchase is made.
